Durango, Colorado, 1953

From the Denver Public Library Digital Collections comes today’s carspotting scene in the parking lot for the Durango and Rio Grande Western Railroad, taken in September 1953, and while we could fancy that these passengers getting tickets for the Silverton train might be taking the train for actual commuting purposes – maybe they’re headed to work or traveling for business – their numbers and dress and demographics seem to indicate that they’re actually tourists, taking the predecessor of today’s Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge sightseeing railtrips, still operating out of the same depot at the end of Durango’s Main Street. Still, they drove some neat cars on their vacations; what do you see here?
