Hemmings Find of the Day - 1959 Bocar XP-5
We don’t see a meatball or a collection of race event stickers plastered over this 1959 Bocar XP-5 re-creation for sale on Hemmings.com, but it appears ready for the track nonetheless, with its cutdown windshield, harnesses, rollbar and twin-carbureted small-block Chevrolet V-8. Then again, given the attention to detail throughout the car, particularly in the interior, it looks like it could be equally as comfortable on the street. From the seller’s description:
This is a one-off recreation of the rare 1959 Bocar XP5. built with period components to original specifications.
Designed by Bob Carnes of Lakewood, Colorado, as the fastest and safest road car in the world, weighing in at a mere 1,750 lbs, the performance and acceleration were staggering achieving 160 mph in standard form with a 0-60 mph in 6 sec with the standard 283 Chevy engine. It is believed some 40 examples were made before the factory mysteriously caught fire and now there only a handful left in existence. This car has been built to race spec as follows:
Engine modified 283 (383) Chevrolet V-8 with twin quad Carter carbs. Gearbox GM T-10 four-speed. Font suspension modified Porsche 356 with Morris 1000 steering rack. Rear suspension modified Porsche 356 torsion bars connected. To axle via link bars and panhard rod. Rear axle modified ford 9” axle with 2.75-1 dif giving 180 mph @ 6,000 rpm. Brakes 4 pot calipers disc on front, Buick alfin drums on rear. Wheels and tyres 6” x 16” front with 6.00 x16 Dunlop racing tyres on 72 spoke jaguar splined wire wheels 6 1/2” x 16 rear with 6.50 x 16” Dunlop racing tyres. Chassis 7/8” & 1 ½” chrome moly (T25) space frame modified and strengthened. Body polyester resin fibreglass body. Instruments Stewart Warner. Safety seat belts, removable roll bar and additional side bars.
